Volunteer Check-In Leader
Check-In is the front door of our events. This area sets the tone for the entire site. You would lead and coordinate a small team to check-in & out volunteers, maintain records, t-shirts, donations, and more.

Overview
Being a Team Leader with HeroWork is a great opportunity to make significant impact in our community. You’ll get to lead and work with quality people who care, while gaining memorable experiences. Through our Radical Renovations, your efforts will directly influence a wide range of organizations and ripple out change for years to come.
As a Check-In Team Leader, your role requires you to understand the schedule of volunteers coming on site for an event, help develop the training curriculum of your team, assist during the team training, then lead your volunteers during the Radical Renovation.
HeroWork’s Volunteer Manager and Executive Director will facilitate the initial training, co-facilitate the team training, provide you and volunteer team members with a clear outline of duties and protocols, and support your leadership during the event.
Pre Event:
- Meeting 1—Team Leaders Training: Team Leaders will tour the renovation site to understand the space. Review project schedule (provided in advance). Assist Volunteer Manager and Executive Director to develop training for the volunteer team. (Your input is important!) Estimated time for meeting, 2 hours. Training date: April 25 or 26, to be confirmed.
- Update of Changes to Check-In Handbook: Between meetings, review the up-dated Volunteer Check-In Manual (several changes have been made to get more volunteers through Check-In in the shortest amount of time possible).
- Meeting 2—Team Members Training: All Team members are to attend this training. Team Leaders will attend and co-facilitate. Consists of tour, scheduling, logistics, and a clear outline of duties. Estimated time for meeting, 2 hours. Training Date: May 9 or 10, to be confirmed.
- Meeting 3—Dry Run: Participate in “dry run” for volunteer check-in, Volunteer Liaison, Safety Orientations, and Site Management. Training Date: May 23 or 24, to be confirmed.
During Event:
- Review schedule to familiarize self with peak periods.
- Review the job hazard assessment with the volunteer team members and general volunteers as appropriate.
- Troubleshoot and reassign volunteers to keep line-ups to a minimum.
- Provide appropriate supervision and support.
- Provide feedback through personal conversations, let them know they have been helpful. Create an atmosphere of care and support among the volunteer team. Be enthusiastic.
- Understand the role of paid staff, maintain a smooth working relationship with them, and stay within the boundaries of the volunteer role.
- Communicate issues or concerns to the Volunteer Manager.
Skills and Attitude:
- Must be 18 years of age or older.
- Experience volunteering with HeroWork, is preferable.
- Must be able to lift up to 25 lbs when assisting with site set up/breakdown.
- Excellent communication skills.
- High level of leadership skills.
- Good organizational skills and the ability to manage a variety of tasks.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work with a diverse range of people.
- Experience volunteering with HeroWork, is preferable.
- The capacity to inspire and motivate others.

Volunteer Liaison Leader
Your role here would be to lead a small team to provide orientations for the project, escort volunteers in and out of the site, and coordinate with renovation superintendents and staff.

Role of Liaison Team Leaders
Overview:

Through our Radical Renovations, your efforts will directly influence a wide range of organizations and ripple out change for years to come.
As a Liaison Team Leader your role will be to understand the logistics of the site and project schedule, participate in Team Leader training, help develop the training curriculum of your team, assist during the team training, and then lead your volunteers during the Radical Renovation.
HeroWork’s Volunteer Manager and Executive Director will facilitate the initial training, co-facilitate the team training with you, provide you and your volunteer team with a clear outline of duties and protocols, and support your leadership during the event.

- Meeting 1—Team Leaders Training: Team Leaders will tour the renovation site to understand the space. Review project schedule (provided in advance). - Safety Presentation: Between meetings, assist in the update of past presentations to be used for June Rad Reno.
- Meeting 2—Team Members Training: All Team members are to attend this training. Team Leaders will attend and co-facilitate. Consists of tour, scheduling, logistics, and a clear outline of duties. Team Manual provided in advance. Estimated time for meeting, 2 hours. Training Date: May 9 or 10, to be confirmed.
- Meeting 3—Dry Run: Participate in “dry run” for Volunteer Check-In, Volunteer Liaison, Safety Orientations, and Site Management. Training date: May 23 or 24, to be confirmed.
During Event:

- Monitor the progression of Safety Orientation presentations and add additional presentations when needed.
- Liaise with Superintendents regarding need for volunteers.
- Provide appropriate supervision and support.

Site Management Leader
Radical Renovation sites can be complex. We need a few leaders who will help to coordinate the set up, breakdown, and running of the site, including food service logistics.

Role of Site Management Volunteer Leaders
Overview

Through our Radical Renovations, your efforts will directly influence a wide range of organizations and ripple out change for years to come.
As a Site Management Volunteer Leader, you will manage the non-renovation elements of the event site including site set-up and breakdown, ongoing maintenance, set-up for meal service, set-up and breakdown for the Opening and Closing Ceremonies, traffic, pedestrian and crowd control.
Your will need to understand the logistics of the site, schedule of volunteers, help develop protocols for your volunteers (i.e., traffic or pedestrian control), and then lead your volunteers during the Radical Renovation.
HeroWork’s Volunteer Manager and Executive Director will facilitate the initial training, provide you with a clear outline of duties and protocols, and support your leadership during the event.

- Meeting 1—Team Leaders Training: Site Management Volunteer Leaders will tour the renovation site to understand the space. Review project schedule (provided in advance). Assist Volunteer Manager and Executive Director to develop and adjust protocols for the volunteer team. (Your input is important!) Estimated time for meeting, 2 hours. Training Date: April 25 or 26, to be confirmed.
- Update of Changes to Site Management Handbook: Between meetings, review the up-dated Site Management Manual as Food Services has been added to this role.
- Meeting 2—Team Members Training: If appropriate, training for pedestrian control may be conducted in advance or on the day-of the renovation, which is yet to be determined.
- Meeting 3—Dry Run: Participate in “dry run” for volunteer check-in, Volunteer Liaison, Safety Orientations, and Site Management. Training Date: May 23 or 24, 2018.

Storytelling Leader
HeroWork is full of amazing stories. This role consists of coordinating a small team of writers and bloggers, and providing editorial assistance as well as logistics support.

Role of Storytelling Team Leaders
Overview
Being a Team Leader with HeroWork is a great opportunity to make significant impact in our community. You’ll get to lead and work with quality people who care, while gaining memorable experiences. Through our Radical Renovations, your efforts will directly influence a wide range of organizations and ripple out change for years to come.
Your role as a Storytelling Leader is to inform, inspire, and manage a small group of writers and bloggers to produce stories on HeroWork, our partner charities (and their mandates), as well as other community stakeholders such as sponsors and/or contributors.
You need to be comfortable with reviewing and editing articles submitted by volunteer contributors and coordinating the publishing of posts on multiple platforms.
HeroWork’s Volunteer Manager and Executive Director will coordinate an initial training to the Storytelling Team Leaders, co-facilitate the larger team training, and provide you and volunteer team members with a clear outline of duties and protocols, and support your leadership throughout the process.
You will provide assignments to various team members, edit the assignments, and ensure they are posted in an appropriate manner. We estimate two team leaders are needed, with 6 to 8 bloggers/writers each producing one article every four to six weeks.
Workflow:
- Meeting 1—Team Leaders Training: Team Leaders will tour both renovation sites to understand the cause and impact of the projects. You will assist Volunteer Manager and Executive Director to develop best practices and specific training for the Storytelling Team. (Your input is important!) Estimated time for meeting, 2 hours. Training date: to be confirmed.
- Between Meetings: HeroWork will produce a Storytelling Manual. Please review manual and adjust as required.
- Meeting 2—Team Members Training: Co-facilitate team training with HeroWork staff. Will include tours of the projects, development of “story buckets,” protocols, and preliminary assignments and scheduling. If necessary, “how to make a blog post” on the HeroWork website will be done through a screen capture video. Training date: to be confirmed.
- Ongoing: Manage and inspire storytellers, edit stories, provide feedback, schedule stories, etc.
Skills:
- Must be 18 years of age or older.
